From Nassau Sound to the Amelia River, boating is a big part of life in Fernandina Beach. When a hurricane approaches, boats are among the most vulnerable property on the island. A little planning, and the right insurance, can make a big difference.
Read your policy's named storm provisions
Many boat policies in Florida include specific requirements for named storms. Some ask you to file a hurricane plan with the insurer. Others may change your deductible if you don't follow your plan. Know these terms before a storm is on the way.
Ask about haul-out coverage
Some boat policies help pay the cost of hauling your boat out of the water, or moving it to a safer location, when a named storm threatens. This coverage can save you hundreds of dollars and may reduce damage. If your policy doesn't include it, ask whether it can be added.
Check your marina or storage contract
Many marinas require boats to be removed or secured in specific ways before a storm, and some require proof of liability insurance. Review your contract so you know your obligations and deadlines.
Make your storm plan now
- Decide where your boat will go: hauled out, on a trailer, or secured in a slip.
- Arrange haul-out early, since marinas fill up fast when a storm approaches.
- Remove electronics, canvas, cushions and loose gear.
- Double up lines and add chafe protection if the boat stays in the water.
- Take photos and video of the boat and its equipment before the storm.
- Keep your policy number and claims phone number with you.
Review your coverage
Make sure your boat's insured value is current, and that your policy includes liability and fuel spill coverage. Damaged boats can cause harm to other vessels and docks, and liability protection matters.
